One of the many uses for the laundry basket around our house:

I know I’ve been a bit picture-heavy in my last few posts, I’m a bit stunned with how quickly Bean is growing & changing (daily, hourly.) He’s starting to crawl–he can get his feet up under his but now, and get fully up into a crawling position, and he then he just sort of hangs out there, rocking back and forth and grinning. It’s adorable. And also terrifying. At least the cats are terrified. They know their days are numbered. They see the glint Bean gets in his eyes every time they pass.

Bean loves to sit in the laundry basket and play with things–and by play, I mean pound a wooden spoon onto the edge of the basket. Yes, he’s discovered that HE can MAKE NOISE that isn’t roaring. Which he is still quite superb at.

When he was newborn, I started putting him in the laundry basket out of desperation when I needed to pee (or take a shower) and wanted him with me. It was such a great, easily transportable (and totally cost effective) solution to the whole fancy-pants bassinet idea.

All this to say, we have to lower his crib mattress tomorrow. And then childproof the house. Any tips?

isn’t it though? Bean is the first baby in our family–extended family that is. So everyone wants to buy him clothes. Of course, I have no complaints about this!

I am STILL trying to figure out some sort of child-proofing that is going to stop my daughter. She’s like HOUDINI or something!

My husband used to tease me when I’d put the baby in the laundry basket with the folded laundry to take upstairs. Now, I have proof that someone ELSE does that too! HA!

Childproofing totally depends on the child. My house is well childproofed for my baby, but when friends bring their babies over, they’re into all kinds of things my baby never touches! Boys especially!

That said, the sockets are the biggest thing because they’re everywhere and I was shocked (ha ha) at how quickly my baby found them and found them interesting. I put ponytail holders around the under-the-sink cabinet handles, bought a gate for the stairs and that’s pretty much it. She has the full run of the downstairs. You don’t need to worry about the toilet yet, but that will be a bigger concern later on. I just make very very sure that the bathroom doors are closed.

    Good luck!

Childproofing really just requires you (and your husband) to make some decisions about what you don’t care about materially and what you do. If you do? Move it out of reach or put it in a cabinet. If you don’t? Don’t worry about it. Most everything is replaceable. We had friends who freaked every time their kid touched their CDs…we didn’t care, but we did store some heirloom knick-knacky things. And we said “no” firmly and removed them from the temptation or distracted them when they wanted to play with the stereo controls. That was about the extent of it, really :)
